उनीहरुमा यही सानो कुरा फरक रहेछ
|
म बस्ने टोलमा एकजना उन्नाइस बीस वरीपरिको एक जना खस भाई बस्छन् । उ असाध्यै गफाडी छ, केही कुरा नजाने पनि तर्क मिलोस् वा नमिलोस् गफ ठोकी हाल्छ । सायद वंशानुगत गुण पनि हुन सक्छन् उ असाध्यै बोल्नु पर्छ । कहिले कही नसुहउदो किसिमले पैसाको धाक पनि लगाउछ । उ आफूलाई पेशाले शिक्षक भन्छ, शिक्षक हुना यो यो गुण चाहिन्छ भनेर फलाक्छ, अनि आफू त्यस्तो गुणले निपुण छु भनेर प्रत्यक्ष रुपमा धाक दिन्छ । अनि सा साना केटा केटी संग टुटे अंग्रेजी बोल्न थाल्छ, जब की त्यो अग्रेजी आफूले मात्र जानेको छ भन्ठान्छ ।
जाडो महिनामा प्राय आगो बालेर बेलुका एक धण्टा सधै हामी आगो ताप्थ्यो । त्यही बेलामा उसले आˆनो औकत कति हो देखाउने गथ्र्यो । तर त्यहा भरिमा पनि उसलाई कसैले मन पराउदैन्थ्यो । एक जना दिदी आˆनो छोरीको हात समायो भनेर ..... सर पनि त्यस्तो हुन्छ त्यो ता खुस्केट हो भन्थ्यो । त्यो भाई पनि अति विध्नका थिए कहिले घरमा मेरो सम्पत्ति यति छ, खेतमा धान यति फल्छ, बा भेटनरीको जिल्ला डाक्टर हुनुहुन्छ... उसको साइकल बारेमा सोध्धै नसोध्ध पनि उ भन्ने गथ्र्यो कि मलाई बाइक किन्न केही समस्या छैन् तर आज मेरो स्वास्थ लागि चढदै छु ।
एकदिन हाम्रै टोलका एकजना दाजुलाई आˆनो कक्षा ६ पढ्ने छोरालाइ फररर अंग्रेजी आएन भनेर प्याट त्यस भाइको अगाडी कुरा आयो, अनि सबैले जिस्काउदै त्यो भाई तिर देखाउदै यो सरले पढाइदिनुहुन्छ भन्यो । उसले पनि हुन्छ भन्यो खुशी साथ । तर मेरो छोरालाइ म अहिले बोलाउछु अंग्रेजीमा सोध्नु भन्यो , त्यो भाईले भइ हाल्छ नि भन्यो । त्यो ६ कक्षामा पढने भाई आयो, अनि त्यो भाइ -सर) ले अंग्रेजीमा सोध्न लाग्यो । सोध्न लागे पछि, उसको अंग्रेजी र गाउ तिर रक्सी खाएर हिड्दा लाहुरेहरुले बोल्ने अंग्रेजीमा मैले भेद पाइन्, तर पनि बोली रहन्छ ।
अर्को दिन उसले त्यो आगो तप्ने ठाउमा आˆनो विज्ञापन कुटनीतिक पाराले गर्यो । म सबैलाई टयुसन् निशुल्क पढाइदिन्छु, भन्यो तिम्रो घर तिर जात भए पनि हून्छ भन्यो तर उसले कुरा गर्दै जदा म एक्लै छु खाना पकाउन वोर हुन्छ खाना दिए हुन्छ भनेर लस्ट गफ त्यता मोड्यो ।
उसको माथिको व्यक्तिगत चरित्रलाई एकछिन नसोच्ने हो भने, सायद एउटा मंगोलियनको छोरा वा छोरी भएको भए त्यो अंग्रेजी फररर सिकाउन चहाने दाईसंग दाईले कुरा गरिदिनु भने पनि उ कुरा नै गर्न चहादैन्थ्यो किन की उ आफूलाई पूर्णरुपमा ज्ञान छैन् भनेर पन्छिन खौज्दथ्यो, किन कि हामी मंगोलियनमा सबै आए पछिमात्र बोल्नु पर्छ भन्ने धारण व्याप्त छ । उसले घुमारोपाराले गफ गरे पनि जागिर चाहिएको भान् हुन्थ्यो, अनि भए हुन्छ नत्र मेरो के जान्छ भन्ने शैलीमा अर्कोतिर आˆनो एक्सपोजर खोजीरहेको थियो, सायद मंगोलियन साथीहरुलाई यस्ता कुरा झिना मसिना लाग्न सक्छ कि झाउ वा लाज लाग्ने गर्छ । तर उ भने आफूलाई निपुण बनाउन यस्तै क्रियाकलाप अघि बढाउदै थियो । उनीहरुमा र हामीमा यही सानो कुरा फरक रहेछ ।

के हो तमू ल्होछार
|
अर्थमा हेर्ने हो भने 'ल्हो' अर्थ साल, संवत, वर्ष, उमेर हो भने 'छार' अर्थ नया हो । यसैले ल्लोछार भनेको नया वर्ष आगमन गर्ने चाड हो वास्तवमा तमूहरुको धर्म संस्कृति अनुसार १२ वटा ल्हो अर्थात वर्ग चक्रमध्ये प्रत्येक पुष १५ मा वर्ष परिवर्तन -ल्हो तोवाः) हुन्छ । ती १२ वटा ल्हो जनावरको नामबाट राखिएको छ जस्तै गाई वर्ग -ल्वोल्हो) बाघ वर्ग -लोल्हो), बिरालो वर्ग -हिल्हो), गरुड वर्ग -मुपि्रहल्हो), सर्प/नाग वर्ग -सपि्रहल्हो),
घोडा वर्ग -तल्हो), भेडा वर्ग -ल्हुल्हो), बादर वर्ग -प्रल्हो), चरा वर्ग -च्यहल्हो), कुकुर वर्ग -खिल्हो), मृग वर्ग -फोल्हो), मुसा वर्ग -च्युल्हो) ।
यो नै प्रत्येक पुष १५ मा एउटा वर्गको विदाई गरी नया वर्गलाई स्वागत गर्दाका प्रतिनिधि हुन् । यसै अनुरुप तमूहरुले २०५६ पुुष १४ गते विदा गरेको बिरालो वर्ग -हिल्हो) लाइै २०६७ पुष १५ गते स्वागत गर्दछौ । यसरी १३ वर्ष पछि आउदो वि.सं २०७९ मा बिरालो वर्गलाई स्वागत गरिनेछ । यसरी नै वर्ग चक्र -ल्हो कोर) परिवर्तन भइरहने छ । यसरी पुष १५ को वर्ग परिवर्तन -ल्हो तोवाः) लाई उत्सवको रुपमा बनाउने संस्कृति नै वास्तवमा
ल्होछार हो ।
खगोलशास्त्र अनुसार पुष १५ का दिन सुर्य पृथ्वीको दक्षिण मकर रेखामा पुगेर उत्तर कर्कट रेखातिर र्फकने दिन पर्ने हुदा त्यो दिनलाई तमूहरुले वर्ग परिवर्तन -ल्हो तोवाः) मानेको छ । त्यसदिन देखि सुर्य उत्तरायण लाग्छ । त्यस देखिनै रात छोटो दिन लामो सुरुवात भएको मानिन्छ । ज्योतिष शास्त्र अनुसार अषाढ १५ लाई सबैभन्दा लामो दिन र पुष १५ सबैभन्दा लामो रातको रुपमा लिएको पाइन्छ । यसो भनी राख्दा डिसेम्बर २२ पश्चिमी खगोल शास्त्रीहरुले निर्धारण गरेका छोटो दिन लामो रात हुन्छ भन्ने विचार र पुर्वेली वेदाङ्ग शास्त्रले पौष शुक्ला प्रतिपदालाई नयाावर्ष मान्ने परम्परासाग नजिक छ ।
ल्होछार पुष शुक्ल प्रतिपदामा तोला, पुष १५ मा तमू -गुरुङ) ले मनाउने ल्होछार, माघमा शुक्ल प्रतिपदामा तमाङले मनाउने सोनाम र फागुनमा प्रतिपदामा शेर्पाले मनाउने ग्याल्पो गरि अहिले सम्म नेपालमा चार थरीका पाईन्छ । तोला सूर्यमा, १५ पुष गतेमा, सोनाम र ग्याल्पो चन्द्रमामा आधारित छन् । ल्होछार तमू -गुरुङ), तमाङ, शेर्पा बाहेक नेपालका थकाली, भोटे, हृयाल्मो, मनाङगे, थकाली, दुरा, जिरेल, लोमी, लेप्चा, भुटिया, डोल्पाली, हुम्ली, सिङमा, खाम मगर, नेस्याङवा लगाएत हिमाली पहाडी मुलका आदिवासीले पनि मनाउदै आएको पाइन्छ । अब दुई तिन महिना भित्रमा यस वर्षको मंगोलियन नया वर्ष चीन, मंगोलिया, जापान, हङकङ, भियतनाम, लाओस, थाइल्याण्ड, ताइवान, मलेसिया, बर्मा, भुटान लगायतका साथै भारतको दार्जिलिङ, सिक्किम, अरुणञ्चल प्रदेश जस्ता ठाउामा मंगोल समुदायले आˆनै तरिकाले धुमधामसाग मनाउछन् ।
ल्होछार मनाउने तरिका जाति र देश अनुसार फरक आर्थिक, सामाजिक तथा साास्कृतिक अवस्था र परम्परा अनुसार पृथक छन् । नेपालमा चाहि तमूहरुले पुष १५ आउनु भन्दा पहिले देखि नै खेलकुद, अन्तरक्रिया, बौद्धिक क्रियाकलाप गरेर ल्होछारको खास दिन नाचगान गदै परम्परा देखि चल्दै आएको एक थलो जम्मा भई सहभोजन गर्ने चलनलाई निरन्तरता दिदै ल्होछार मनाएको पाइन्छ । साथै पौष १५ पछिको पौष भरि नै हर्सोउल्लासको साथ स्योर्कै खादैं ल्होछार मनाउछन् ।

मलाई त्यति मन परेन्, ठीकै लाग्यो......
|
 मैले केही महिना अगाडी पत्रपत्रिकामा एउटा विज्ञापन पढेको थिए, नारायण वाग्लेको दोस्रो उपन्यास मयुर टाइम्स बजारमा छिट्टै आउदैंछ, नेपालमा जुनसुकै ठाउामा भए पनि त्यहि दिनमा तपाईको हातमा त्यस्तै आशयको..... खोई ठयाक्कै त मैले बिर्से । त्यो विज्ञापन पढ्दा म काठमाडौमै थिए तर उसको किताब विमोचन हुने दिनमा म हिमालको जरा तिर युवाहरुसाग गफिदै थिए होला । त्यसैले मैले विमोचनको हल्ला अझै त्यति सुन्न पाइन् । मैले निक्कै हल्लाकै बिचमा उनकै पहिलो उपन्यास पल्पसा क्याफे पढेको थिए, धेरै मैले पढेको उपन्यासहरु मध्येमा मथिल्लो स्तरमा मैले यो उपान्यास पाएा, तर चर्चा पाउनु पर्ने भन्दा बढी चर्चा पाएको मैले महसुुस गरे त्यति बेला पल्पसा क्याफेलाई । अहिले पनि मयुर टाइम्स आउनु भन्दा पहिले नै चर्चा बेशी थियो । पाठकसागको राम्रो पहुाच भएको नागरिक दैनिक र रिपब्लिका दैनिकसागको पहुच भएको कारणले पनि नरायण वाग्लेलाई धेरै फाइदा पुग्यो ।
पराग यादव, मयुर टाइम्सको सम्पादक, यो उसको जीवन वरी परि घुमेको छ, पराग यादवलाई आपहरणकारीले अपहरण गर्छे ।
तराई मुलकी ओभरसियरकी छोरी बुवाको सरकारी जागिर पहाडतिर हुन्छ, बुवासागै हाई स्कूलसम्मको पढाई पहाडमा सक्छे । त्यहाा हुदा उसले डल्ली दिदीकी छोरी लिसरा पुन आˆनो हितैसी मित्र पाउछे । लिसराको बुवा मलेसिया गएर त्यतै हराएको हुन्छे । त्यहा बस्दा कति साथीले परागलाई धोतीको बच्चा भनेर जिस्काउदा लिसरा केटा नै नभनीकन मुक्का प्रहार गरिदिन्थे । एस. एल. सी पछि पराग आˆनो बुवाको साथीको घरमा बसेर काठमाडौंमा पढाई पुरा गर्न लागी । उनी बैकमा काम गर्न पनि थलि । एक समय उ आˆनो पेशाको हृयाङओभर पेटाउन मयुर नगर पुगिन्, एउटा चिया पसलमा चिया खाादै गर्दा कुराकानीमा चियापसले आमाको कथा सुन्ने अवसर पाइन् तर त्यहि आमाले नै पत्रकार भनेर चिनाई दिएकी पत्रकार........ बाल्यकालको साथी लिसरा पुनसाग एक्कासी भेट हुन्छे । व्म्यनेजमेन्ट पढेपनि पत्रकार अनि पराग बैकमा काम गरे पनि मास कम्युनिकेशनमा मास्टर गरि रहेको जस्ता कुराको भलाकुुसारी हुन्छ । लिसरा मयुर टाइम्सको अफिसमा परागलाई लान्छे र चिनपर्ची गराउछे । पराग ध्यानपूर्वक लिसराको काम हेरिरहन्छे, साच्ची कै उसको अटिला र साहसिक कुराले पराग गर्वले फुलिन्छे ।
त्यसै बेलामा मयुर टाइम्समा सम्पादकको अवश्यकता थियो, किन कि प्रशासक नै सम्पादक बन्दा अलि काम गर्न पनि अप्ठारो हुने गरेको थियो । लिसराले परागलाई सम्पादकमा अफर गरिन् तर शुरुमा मानिन् तर पछि उ बैकको जागिर छोडेर मयुर टाइम्सको सम्पादक बन् राजी भइन् । मयुर टाइम्स मोफसलको पत्रिका थियो । यसले प्रशासनको ढिलासुस्ती, लाचारीपनाका उदंग गथ्र्यो । द्घन्दको कारणले परेको पीर मर्का देखि न्यायको लागि आवाज उठाउन यसले सानो मुद्घालाई राम्रो कभर गथ्र्यो । मयुर नगर पहाडी र मधेशीमुलको बस्ती थियो । त्यहाा पहाडबाट द्घन्दकै कारण विस्थपित भई फेरि मधेशबाट पनि त्यहि कारणले विस्थपित हुने महिमा मिस जस्ताको बसोस्थान थियो । दिनमा राजनितिक पार्टीको खोल ओड्ने राती सशस्त्र समुह को नाममा आतक मच्चाउने, अनि प्रहरी प्रशासन देखि सिडियो कार्यालय सम्मको मिलेमातोमा केशलाई थामथुम पार्ने जस्ता कुराको नालीवालीलाई पर्दाफास गर्न मयुर टाइम्स मार्फत खेलेको भुमिका लाई यसले डकुमेन्ट गरेको छ, यसरी गर्दा सम्पादक अपहरण परेको र यो पेशा छोडन् धक्की दिएको वरी परी यो उपन्यास घुमेको छ ।
नारायण वाग्लेले आˆनो पत्रकारिताको बखत कति ठाउामा आफूले भोगेको कुरालाई उपन्यास मार्फत पोखेका छन् । उनको मिठो भाषा त छदैछ, कति ठाउामा उनीे अनावश्यक बढी कल्पनिक भयो कि... अध्याय ४ र ५ जहाा नारायण वाग्लेले बढी शब्दसाग खेल्न लाग्यो कि, त्यहाा नेर पढदा मलाई त्यति आनन्द चाहि लागेन । यो साधारण जो नेपाली अलि कति राजनीतिक रुपमा अपडेट रहन्छन्, त्यसको लागि भएन् कि, यो विदेशीको लागि र नेपालका द्घन्दको भने राम्रो डकुमेन्ट बनेको छ । ३०० नभएर २०० भन्दा माथि नगरेको भए विद्यार्थीहरुलाई अलि सहुलियत हुने थियो कि, मयुर टाइम्स नि अब स्टुडेन्ट भर्सन निकाल्दा राम्रो होला ।

Indentify your owns self
|
The unique energy & creativity of Youth is often denied to community. They are viewed only in terms of their lack of maturity and practical life experience. The legitimate dreams & desires of youth are frequently ignored by the elders, who, they claim to be the superior one and more responsible members of the community and obviously they are, and respected, appreciated accordingly. But in return youth are always been ignored. That’s the reason, some youth are frustrated and even have attempted to commit suicide, if not, have diverted in doing criminal activities, and having drugs and slowly killing themselves.
Elder members have never ever given the proper opportunities, however youth can always make a significant contribution to the communities in which they live, and they can be integrated into the life of the community, through the series of productive and mutually beneficial relationships. That the elders have never thought.
Youth are the positive assets, that they can make unique contribution to the development of Community. Because, they do have certain amount of free time which the elder members don’t have, if this un-utilized time can be used in constructive community project, which will lead the society toward the betterment.
Youth have Unique Ideas & creativity, if those are infusion, and used in particular project can obviously bring different. Yes, they haven’t experienced failures and disappointments as adult posses, but if they are guided with good manner and involve along with may possess it and can make something extra in the age of being adult, till the date, their enthusiasm and energy all have gone in waste, which nobody has felt yet too.

फोटोशेसन, वहस र नयाँ अनुभवको बीचमा प्रणय दिवश....!!!

"अरु दिन झन् प्रशस्त जोडी देखिने यो दिन टन्नै होला है भनेको त खाशै जोडी देखिन नि.. " - सौरभ यस्तै अड्कल वाजी काट्दै, हाँसो र खुशीका बीचमा एक हुल जत्था लिएर ट्रेकिङको लागि शिवपुरी राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज छिर्दै थिए । अघोषित रुपमा यात्राको गाइड चाँहि सौरभ र रघु थिए । यिनीहरु जोसिदै भन्दै थिए, ग्रुप बवाल मिलेको छ, हामी जता नि जान सक्छौ है, यो अलि extreme हाइकिङ हुन्छ । उनीहरुका फुर्ति, फार्ति नै वेग्लै थियो । हाईकिङ शुरु भयो सौरभ अघि अघि हामी पछि पछि.... extreme हाइकिङ भनेर होला, उनीहरुले बाटो सबै शटकट रोजे । हामी सबै हिडन थाल्यौ तर के बीस मिनेट हिडेको के थियो मेरो र सुरथको त हालत खराव... पछि परियो बा । अरु युवाहरु भने मानिस नहिडेको भर्जिन एरिया हिड्नु पर्छ, भनेर साँची नै कोही नहिडेको एरिया, जुन गार्हो छ, त्यही एरिया हिड्थे । तर कुनै बेला त आपत नै पारि दिन्थ्यो, लाग्थ्यो कि रक climbing नै गरिरहेछु कि क्या हो जस्तो । रघु वीच वीचमा refreshment गर्नको लागि फोटो, भिडियो खिच्थ्यो । अनि यो बाघको विष्ट हो, यो हरिणको भनेर हामीलाई भन्थ्यो, त्यस माथि पनि जंगलमा कसरी सरभाइभ हुने टिप्स सिकाउथ्यो । फेरि केहिछिन पछि उकालो पनि तेर्सोमा जस्तो घोडा कुदाई कुद्नुपथ्र्यो । कही अलि अचम्मको अजङको रुख, ढुंगा, लहारो वा अरु कुनै अनौठौ कुरा देख्यो कि रघु चढ्न वा एक्सपेरिमेण्ट गर्न कोसिस गरि हाल्थ्यो, अनि सौरभ त्यसलाई साथ दिन्थ्यो, साँची नै नेचरको त किसिमको थियो, सुरथ हाम्रो पुर्खहरु वाँदर, अनि वाँदरको पूर्खाहरु चाहि रघु हो कि क्या हो, भन्दै प्रतिक्रिया जनाउथ्यो, अनि रेवती प्रभु भन्दै त्यो गजल्टिएको कपाललाई खोलेर त्यो कोही नहिड्ने बाटो हिडदा साची नै अनुभव चाही नौलो थियो, कतिको लागि.... बाटो निस्कन्छ त !!! वनभोजवालाहरुको हुल... हामी यी जत्थाले अलि हाम्रो यात्रालाई विथोल्छ कि भनेर हामी दौड्यो, दौडमा सौरभ निकै माजले दौडिन्थ्यो । अनि
जादै गर्दा त वाघद्धार नआई पुग्दै सुरज मित्र भोकले लखतरन भई सकेछ ।
अनि शिवपुरी बाबाको आश्रममा निर पुगेर लुछाचुडी गरि सातु, तरकारी, पाउरोटी खायौ सुरथ मात्रै भनेको त सबलाई पो भोक लागेछ, भोक मिठो कि भोजन भन्ने कुरा उखान साँची नै सम्झन योग्य भयो त्यति बेला । अनि अनेक पोज दिदै हामी उकालो के चढ्न लाग्या त हाम्रो गाइड सौरभलाई पेट दुख्यो भन्छ त बा... केहिछिनको विश्राम पछि हामी अगाडी बढ्यौ अनि लालीगुराँस फूलके देख्यो रघु लालिगुराँस टिप्न रुखमा चढिदियौ अनि ए फोटो खिच्न भनेर करायो पनि, रुखमै अनेक पोज थियो उसको । फुल टिप्नु के पाको थियो सौरभ मित्र प्रेम प्रस्ताव यसरी राख्नु पर्छ भनेर गफ हान्दै, फुलै लिएर दैखाउदै थिए । त्यसपछि त शिवपुरी डाडा जिन्दाबाद आइपुगेछ । सबैले लामो सास ताने अनि... के आउन पाको थियो... लखतरान....मित्रहरु लाग्थ्यो कि आफ्नै शयन कक्षमा पल्टिदै छ । जाने वित्तिकै त्यो चौरमा मरे जसरी नै पल्टि दियो, साँची नै पल्टिदाको आनन्द बेग्लै थियो । त्यति बेला कतिलाई बोल्दा नि झर्को लागि रहेको थियो ।
साँची आनन्दको अनुभुति......
केही छिन पछि ओरलो झर्यौ, फेरि केहि नयाँ कुरा के बाटोमा भेट्थ्यौ.... फोटोको लागि फरक फरक पोज दिई हल्थ्यौं । त्यसैमा अघिको एक जोडीलाई भेट्यो । उसले मलाई चिनेको रहेछ, बोल्यौ पनि । केहि छिन पछि सुरथ भन्दै थियो, साँच्ची नै कस्तो मेमोरेवल हुन्छ है यहाँ डेटिङ आयो भने... त्यसमा मैले नि सही थापे । ओरालो आयो, सबै दौडिन थाले । अलि सुनसानमा रघु र सौरभको प्रस्ताव योगासन गर्ने थियो, सबैले योग गरे साच्ची योगासन निकै रमाइलो भयो । अनि के हामी शिवपुरी नेर आइपुग्न लाग्यो फेरि सधैको वादविवाद पुजिबाद र कम्युनिजमको शुरु.....त्यो क्रम महाराजगञ्ज सुरथ नओर्लदा सम्म जारी... अनि केहि मुद्दा थाती राख्दै यो वर्षको प्रणय दिवस पनि प्रणय सुत्रका कुरा नगरी विदा । हेरौ अकौ साल के हुन्छ ।

Call for Research Fellowship 2008
|
Martin Chautari invites applications for 12 full-time 1 year Research Fellowships.
The nature and duration of fellowships
These fellowships are meant for those who are keen to develop their research abilities and pursue a career in social research. Selected fellows will attend a 3-month course on “diversity and pluralism” starting in January 2009 and engage in full-time research beginning in March 2009. They will have to undertake research in either Nepali or English in a theme related to ‘enhancing access of marginalized communities to higher education in Nepal’. The research will be of 10 months duration. During this period, the fellows will carry out their research under supervision of a senior researcher facilitated by Martin Chautari. The fellows will have to produce one academic article jointly with their supervisor and one single author article based on their research. They will be expected to regularly participate in and organize discussions and seminars at Martin Chautari and also make periodic presentations of their research progress.
Stipends and benefits
The selected fellows will be provided with a monthly stipend allowance of up to NRs 15,000 for 12 months. Appropriate tax will be deducted at source on this amount. They will have access to Martin Chautari Library. No other financial benefits will be provided by Martin Chautari.
Eligibility requirements
Those who have completed Masters’ level coursework or higher from universities in Nepal and can commit to full-time research should apply. Priority will be given to members from marginalized communities, and women. Those teaching in colleges are also encouraged to apply. Those who cannot commit to full time research need not apply.

Application documents should include a cover letter, updated CV with contact address, one page concept note of proposed research, copy of citizenship certificate and a copy of previous research or publications if any. Annoucement- Development Gateway Foundation Photo Contest !!!
|
The Development Gateway Foundation photo competition is open to ALL photographers at least 13 years of age, except employees of the foundation and their immediate families. Your entry to the contest constitutes your agreement to allow your photograph, name, occupation, city and state of residence, to be published as the selected award winner; published or used on the foundation Web sites; and used for the promotion of the foundation including, but not limited to, Web pages, brochures, fact sheets, and other materials. Entrants retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their photographs. The Development Gateway Foundation shall have the right to verify, in its sole judgment, winner eligibility.
WHAT: We are looking for compelling photographs of socio-economic development in developing countries. Four types of photographs will be accepted. The images may show information and communications technologies helping ordinary people. The images may show people making something, selling wares, working in a field, constructing a building or type of infrastructure, or acquiring knowledge. The images could be abstract images representing hope, the future, or capacity building. The photographs may also include images of original artwork from a developing country. Please do not include photographs of groups of people posing. Each entry must include a written statement explaining how that image is representative of development. Images will be judged on technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person.
WHEN: Deadline for submitting entries is September 19, 2008. Individuals living within the United States will receive the prize as a check by the mail. Individuals living outside the United States will receive the prize as a wire transfer. In this case, the winner must provide information on his or her bank account. World TB Cup: Comic Book Competition !!!

The ProjectThe Stop TB Partnership is producing a 16-page educational comic book that will provide key information about tuberculosis. The comic book will feature Mr Figo as the main character and will target an audience of children and young adults. The objective is to reach these audiences through a reputable and appealing voice. The educational comic book will be available in the six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) plus Portuguese for distribution around the world. Plans are that famous writers or other personalities will write the adaptations in these languages. The educational comic book will be distributed in collaboration with other United Nations organizations and partners. The Competition RulesThe Stop TB Partnership — with the support of the Partners listed below — is conducting an international competition to design images for the educational comic book on tuberculosis featuring Luis Figo.
ELEGIBILITY
The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. SUBMISSION
Entrants must submit a minimum of 5 of the complete 16 panels on or before 10 April 2008 to be eligible for the competition. The winner will be selected on the basis of this initial entry. MOUNTAINS & PEOPLE Global Digital Photo COntest !!!

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Mountain Forum (MF)/Asia Pacific Mountain Network (APMN) are jointly organizing a Global Digital Photo Contest to mark the 25th Anniversary of ICIMOD, whose slogan is "For Mountains and People". On 5 December this year, ICIMOD celebrates its 25th birthday. A series of events have been planned throughout the year, and the Global Digital Photo Contest is one of the most important ones.
THEME /CATEGORIES
Not surprisingly, the theme chosen for the Digital Photo Contest is "Mountains and People". It encompasses the following four categories: - Mountains - Geo/physical elements (mountain range, massif, mountain landscape, high altitude rangeland, bodies of water, waterfalls, rivers, etc)
- Mountains - Hazards/Disasters (landslides, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, potentially dangerous glacial lakes, mud-slides, dangerous roads, trails & river crossings, etc)
- People - Livelihoods (farming, shifting cultivation, grazing, hunting, fishing, transhumance, trade, porterage, tourism, etc)
- People - Culture (festivals, shamanism, rites of passage, dance , etc)
AWARDS The top two entries will receive the ICIMOD Hindu Kush-Himalayan Prize and the Mountain Forum Global Prize. In addition, four Special Mentions will be awarded, one for each category. The "top 50" entries may be exhibited in select Hindu-Kush Himalayan countries.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY The contestants may submit only entries that they hold copyrights to. The contestants must accept that participation in the contest constitutes agreement to allow their entries to be used by ICIMOD and/or MF for non-commercial promotional purposes (in publications, calendar, screensaver, websites, exhibitions, etc). Due credit will, of course, be given to the copyright-holder each time his/her entry is used. The contestants may not submit entries which they have contributed to ICIMOD/MF in the past, or which have already been used elsewhere in whatever form.The contestants may not submit entries that have been digitally manipulated (e.g. composite images).
JUDGMENT CRITERIA
A panel of judges will select the entries for two Grand Prizes and four Special Mentions based on
a) Composition
b) Content
c) degree of 'mountain-ness' conveyed by content
d) originality
e) Overall effectiveness in conveying the theme/category of the contest.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
This contest is open to anybody.
HOW TO SUBMIT ENTRIES?
Each contestant may submit up to 4 entries. How you want to distribute your maximum quota of 4 entries among the categories is up to you.
You may, for example, submit all your 4 entries on CULTURE, OR 2 entries on GEO/PHYSICAL ELEMENTS, and 2 on HAZARDS/DISASTERS, OR 1 entry on each of the four categories , OR 3 on LIVELIHOODS and 1 on CULTURE, etc.
Please submit your entries, one entry AT A TIME, using the Submit Image form provided here. (The entries can only be in the form of black and white, or color digital images, each image not to exceed 3 MB, in high resolution JPEG format.)

Application 2008-2009 The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from developing countries, and preparing a doctoral thesis in a subject related to development. Research grants cover residence costs in a university or research center in a member country of the World Bank other than the home country or country of residence of the candidate. Fellowships are awarded for a period of five to ten months and must be completed between July 2008 and June 2009. The maximum amount of the grant is US$25,000.
